Jackson State University

One of the reasons why a person might be looking at real estate in Jackson, Mississippi is that he or she is considering attending Jackson State University. However, just like making a decision about buying real estate, or choosing a company to produce your mortgages commercial, deciding which university to attend is not something you should do at the drop of the hat. You should do your research and make sure the school is the right one for you. This article can provide you with a starting point if you're thinking about going to Jackson State University.

Jackson State University, located in Jackson, Mississippi, was founded in 1877 as a seminary school dedicated to educating former slaves. Over the years it has grown and prospered. It is now a public university with a 12 million dollar endowment (that much money can buy a lot of heat shrink tubing for science experiments) and a mandate to be a model of urban learning and research to a variety of students from diverse backgrounds. Currently enrollment sits at just over 8,000.

Programs at Jackson State University fall under the purview of one of the six colleges. First there's the College of Business. You would go there if you wanted to found a company dedicated to search engine optimization in Ontario, because its programs include accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Meanwhile if you wanted to study a subject like art, music, history, philosophy, psychology, or communication, you would apply to the College of Liberal Arts, and if you wanted an interdisciplinary degree you would go to the College of Lifelong Learning.

The College of Education and Human Development focuses on programs like education and counseling while the College of Public Service prepares students for careers in health science, social work, or working in a bureaucratic office like the department of trademark registration in Canada. It's the College of Engineering and Technology that gets all the research funding, though. They have programs like aerospace science, biology, atmospheric science, environmental health, and graduate engineering.

If your interests lie less along the avenues of grammar or the functionality of pipeline strainers and more along the lines of baseball hitting bat, Jackson State University also has an athletics program. The JSU Tiger men compete in baseball, basketball, football, golf, track, tennis, and cross country running, while the women compete in basketball, bowling, golf, track, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and cross country running.

If you're worried about being able to afford your education at Jackson State University, some of the departments like music and athletics have their own scholarship programs. There's also a financial aid office that can assist you in finding outside scholarships and loans if you don't qualify for a university scholarship.
