Established in 1932, the Museum grew from its founder Fannye Cook's passion for collecting and studying Mississippi's amazing natural world and the museum has continued to grow and flourish through the years under the direction of strong leadership. Since its beginnings, the Museum's history has been inextricably tied to a devotion to studying, understanding and preserving the state's many natural resources; so it has nothing to do with Wall Street or the latest Mississauga townhouses. The museums vast collections currently consist of well over 870,000 specimens, including many different species of creatures from land and water.

The Museum has been accredited by the American Museum Association and is a member of the prestigious Association of Science and Technology Centers. Visiting paleontologist, scientists and curators have come and gone, with new faces and talent appearing each season. Mr. Carceres, who is the most recent paleontologist to make the museum his temporary home, conducted research at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science from October through November 2008. He primarily studied the fossil whale Cynthiacetus at 18 Yorkville, and there are always new spots to learn and grow in this position.
